The complexity of touring in Italy
Touring in Italy isn’t as simple as it sounds. Mostly because planning your roadtrip without a knowledge of the local roads, doesn’t guarantee you will get the best riding roads. For maximum riding pleasure, there’s no better way than riding with a local, who has spent years exploring all the roads. This means that all the wrong turning have already been taken, nothing is left to chance.
But why so many roads?
Considering that the first paved roads arrived in Italy with the Romans not far off 3000 years ago, there has been a rather long time for the network to be developped and expanded. Nothing stopped the Romans. Natural obstructions, like a mountain? They dug a tunnel. Big valley? They built a bridge. Thankfully for us however, the road surfaces have changed a fair bit since then!
After the fall of the Roman empire, Italy was mostly divided in independent city-states, or governed by feudal Lords. Each city-states, such as Florence and more famously Venice, became independent trading states, each trying to outdo the other. And of course, to attract trades, roads are built. And to add to the network, the 20s saw the first motorway being built, not just in Italy but the world. Today, Italy has a motorway network of near enough 7000 km, linking major cities together.
Hence why today, there can be 10 different roads to link two cities together. From Autostrada, to a Super Strada and the Strada Provinciale, the choice is vast. Sadly, not all roads are made equal. Some are straight with no sceneries, some are rough and quite frankly dangerous, and of course you have the ones we like, twisty, with great views, with a bit of history thrown in. By the way, no euphemism here!
